Rich and mighty brought to book: Biggest-ever financial leak with global ripples
More politicians and tycoons appear to be marred by scandal as the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) keeps adding names to its list of owners of secret offshore firms. ICIJ promises two more weeks of exposures.
A third of the world’s wealth is tied up in the offshore, according to the Tax Justice Network, cited byICIJ’s website. That’s estimated at US$20 trillion.
Tax Haven Number One appears to be the UK-controlled British Virgin Islands (BVI), home to more than a million offshore entities, while Britons act as nominee directors for such companies, renting out their names to the actual business owners.
British MP’s urged Prime Minister David Cameron to act against the offshore industry and address the issue of tax havens at June’s G8 summit, to be hosted by the UK.

Activist arrested for wearing ‘Occupy Everything’ jacket

If you’re planning a trip to Washington, DC, you might want to choose your wardrobe wisely. A federal judge says that a Florida man was not wrongly arrested for wearing an “Occupy Everything” jacket inside the Supreme Court. Fitzgerald Scott of Tampa, Florida was inside of the Supreme Court building last year when a guard told him he had to do something about the homemade jacket he was wearing. The slogan that was painted on his coat, “Occupy Everything,” constituted a form of demonstration, the security guard said.
According to court papers, Supreme Court Police officer Justen Freeman told Mr. Scott on Jan. 20, 2012 that the words “Occupy Everything” weren’t allowed inside of the building.… Continue reading
‘CIA killed 9/11 author in black ops hit’
A former US National Security Agency officer says the 9/11 investigative author Philip Marshall and his children were killed in a “black ops hit” by the CIA, dismissing the suicide hypothesis. Wayne Madsen said in a show organized by Kevin Barrett, a founder of The Muslim-Jewish-Christian Alliance, that he had reached the conclusion after a week long investigation.
Marshall was afraid of being silenced for his revelations about 9/11, Madsen said, noting that a side door the investigator never used was wide open when his dead body was found. Along with Marshall, 14-year-old Micalia and her 17-year-old brother Alex were also found dead. Madsen suggested that Marshall, who had observed many covert operations, had decided to shed light on mysterious issues in the last years of his life. US and China accuse each other of cyber warfare
Security experts in the United States claim that a 12-story office building outside of Shanghai is the headquarters of a sophisticated hacking unit within the Chinese military established to attack computer networks in America and elsewhere.
According to a report published Tuesday morning by a Northern Virginia-based information security company, an elusive squadron of Chinese cyberwarriors operating under the name Unit 61398 has engaged in countless battles with governments and entities around the globe for years under the umbrella of the People’s Liberation Army.
The group is accused of infiltrating the computers of some of the biggest businesses and agencies in the US, both public and private alike, and is assumed to still be at large.

Cyber-gang extorted millions by posing as cops, copyright holders
European police have busted a cybercriminal ring that extorted millions of euros with a computer virus that locked machines up and demanded a ransom. They also posed as police, accusing victims of viewing child pornography and infringing copyrights.
Eleven suspects were detained in an operation by Europol and Spanish police, police reported on Wednesday. A 27-year-old Russian who allegedly created and distributed the virus was detained in the United Arab Emirates in December, while on vacation. Ten others were detained in Spain last week, including Russians, Ukrainians and Georgians, Spanish police said.
“This is the first major success of its kind against a very new phenomenon that we have only identified in the last two years,” Europol Director Rob Wainwright said at a news conference at the Spanish Interior Ministry in Madrid.

Zombie law: CISPA cyber bill resurrected from the dead
The two US lawmakers responsible for last year’s failed cybersecurity bill known as CISPA are reintroducing the act, and renewed interest from Washington means it might have a fighting chance this time at being signed into law.
Less than ten months after the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act stalled on Capitol Hill after being overwhelmingly approved in the House of Representatives, the architects of bill that’s been called “Worse than SOPA” are once more pitching their effort to politicians.
If approved, CISPA could reshape the way American businesses interact with the federal government by setting up a system for private sector entities to share cyberthreat information with any agency administered by Uncle Sam, a notion being called a national security necessity by an increasing number of figures in Washington. Software that tracks your every move and predicts future behavior draws heat
US defense giant Raytheon has developed a controversial software that uses social networking sites to track your movements, able to predict where a person will be and their future behavior. The program has drawn criticism from civil rights groups.
A video obtained exclusively by The Guardian shows how software developed by the US defense contractor Raytheon, can gather vast amounts of personal information from social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Foursquare.
Raytheon has admitted that the technology was shared with the US government as part of a joint research and development program in 2010, as part of an effort to build a national security system capable of analyzing trillions of entities from cyberspace.
But, the Massachusetts-based company says it has not sold the software, which is called Riot, or Rapid Information Overlay Technology, to any clients.
