The Acropolis at night

After arriving in Athens at night, the first thing I wanted to do was to see the most important sight in the city…..The Acropolis.

I was staying 3 stops away by metro, but I was so keen to see as much as possible that I walked.

From my hotel I headed towards Omonia. This used to be the heart and soul of Athens years ago, but it is now a sad remnant of what it once was.

I then headed from Omonia to Syntagma Square, the location of so many famous political events and speeches,  After taking some time to watch the ‘Evzones’ (Greek soldiers in traditional uniform) I then slowly made my way to the Acropolis.

Around the foothills of The Acropolis, there is quite a lot of life at night.

I could see people everywhere, I assumed that there must have been something at the theatre. As it happens, there was something on at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, which was built in the 2nd century AD by money donated from Tiberius Claudius Atticus Herod, a member of an important Athenian family.

Imagine that? This building wad one of the last to be built in ancient times, yet it has been there for EIGHTEEN CENTURIES! !!

The Acropolis

After wandering around in awe if this magnificence for a while, I wandered further along and I cam to. Areopagus Hill (Mars Hill) Although it was now dark, I knew that I would have a wonderful view of The Acropolis from there. I made my way to the top and slowly moved closer to the edge, I just wanted that tree to be a little further out of my shot. One final step to my left, and my left foot was in the air, in my eagerness to get my shot,I nearly stepped over the edge of a sheer drop!

Anyway, I got an amazing shot and I will be posting it along with many others very soon.
